Summer Big? Or Summer Small?

Quick reminder of three giveaways here, here, and here.

***

My husband has Twins tickets, and he asked me when I wanted to head up to Minnesota to go watch them play. We love going up there (I grew up in the Twin Cities - sorta), and I still have a lot of friends up there. And an outdoor ballpark for the Twins and not just the Saints - the minor league team in St. Paul? Rock on.

So I did a mental perusal of my calendar.

Welllll, the wee ones are in school until mid-June. Mister Man has a few more days than Little Miss, but they end around the same time. They've both asked to do summer school, which means they're booked until July 9. They're really neat classes - Mister Man, for example will be doing a science experimentation class and learning to cook - and the price for four hours a day five days a week for the entire session is less than regular daycare for a single week.

With Little Miss going into kindergarten, she gets busy on the schedule next with SafetyTown that starts up July 12 and runs until the beginning of August. It's a really neat program that teaches kids all about various types of safety and things they need to know from riding bikes to electricity and more.

August brings me to BlogHer. Oh yeah. And Florida. In fact, my parents are taking the wee ones to Florida for two weeks starting the day before I leave for BlogHer.

And by the time we get back? Well, school is starting up that next week already.

Huh.

Going to Minnesota isn't something I really want to do in a quick weekend, especially since I'll give in and drive rather than buy four plane tickets and rent a car. Even Labor Day weekend is painful, not to mention crowded.

How is it that summer has already disappeared before it's even started? We're back to fifty degree weather, and in my book that's barely even spring.

The more I think about it, the sadder I get. The fun zoo trips, the jaunts down to the children's museum, the lazy days at the pool, those all seem further and further away.

Most of this I can't change, and much of it I wouldn't want to. Both wee ones picked out their summer school classes, and they are very excited to go. But maybe SafetyTown doesn't need to happen this year. Maybe we'll do it next year when Little Miss is going into first grade. Without naps, we can do more fun things later in the day than what we can now.

After all, summer is about getting up when you want to. It's about forgetting what day of the week is it, having no schedule, and figuring out the day's plan as the day unfolds. It's about relaxing and trying new things and plain having fun.

And I could really use some fun in my life. They're only young once, and I'd like to enjoy it. Besides, I have some Twins games I need to go see.

I found myself in summer scheduling overdrive recently and began to realize that I had my girls out of the house almost every day during the break. And then it hit me that this Fall, both of my girls will be in school all day every day. And I cried. And then I cancelled half of the summer activities and relished the idea of just hanging out with them. I totally agree that we need to enjoy this time with them because we'll never be able to duplicate these ages. Y'all have a great summer!

Oh man I broke out the capris and as soon as I did the weather went to crap here :(.

I just hope it's nice in 3 weeks we're having Cole's Party at the Children's Museum here and I would hate for it to rain again :(

Time does fly by. I was just looking at pix of my 3 boys when they were little and I suddenly ached to be a mommy to those little boys again. But we'll see them and their families at the end of April and I'll get to snuggle with some little boys (grandsons) again. Hope your summer workds out perfectly for you and your family

What about work? have you decided on that yet?

My summer involves our new charter school and long long hours of daylight :D baby turkeys and fishing too!

I love the lazy days of summer and have gone out of my way every year to keep the schedule light.

Yep, summer's pretty much over. How depressing.

You're so much like me I'm thinking about investigating our birth records. Are you sure you're not just a few years older? Or maybe I'm younger than I thought I was.

I'm looking forward to summer not for the heat but a little reprieve. WOW, you are going to have a busy summer!

Waiting on those summer days!!

Angie - I love the idea of hanging - it's a big reason why we don't do any/many after school activities. Down time is critical, although I'm actually ok with my wee ones being in school full time next year!

Alexis - I have my fingers crossed for you on the weather. Toes, too!

Pat - There is always the respite of grandchildren to look forward to. And no sleepless nights with crying infants then!

Laura - I haven't decided, although I'm definitely leaning a certain way. Just make sure you don't go fishing for those baby turkeys!

WeaselMomma - Me, too. Glad to hear we're not the only ones trying to keep it from being too hectic. More time for us to play? :)

Melisa - I'm definitely not any older than I think I am. It must be that you're actually younger. Want to start calling yourself 34 again? :)

Sherry - I think we're going to try to make it a little less busy and a little more lazy. Decision made: no SafetyTown!

Denise - Summer is definitely the best. Although fall pretty much rocks, too. And spring isn't too bad.

Unknown Mami - For such a short flight for the four of us ... not worth it. We'll make time to get up there and have a good family time.

Michelle April 7, 2010 at 8:25 PM

Kelly - I thought it was summer by you already? No?

Karen April 8, 2010 at 10:19 PM

I hear you! And things only get worse as the kids get older. I hope you find some summer to enjoy.

Michelle April 9, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Karen - We're finding some summer. In fact, with us not doing Safety Town this year, that buys us four weeks of summer fun. Next year she can do Safety Town in the afternoons after summer school so we still have that time open. I hope! :)
