Let's Do The Time Warp Again!

Every day, I go from my kitchen into the garage and into my car. By the time I make it into my car, I've lost at least six minutes. At first, I thought this was the wee ones' fault. You know how kids dawdle. But then I realized that this happens when I'm on my own headed to work, too.

I look at the clock in the kitchen, and it's 6:13. I grab my stuff, put my shoes on, and by the time I turn on my car, it's 6:22. In the grand scheme of things that's not the biggest problem except that traffic really starts to increase after 6:15.

The worst though is on Sundays. Sunday school starts at 9:05am. The church is literally five minutes door to door. If I start getting shoes on at 8:48, that should give me plenty of time to get to Sunday School on time, right?

Not really.

Or when Little Miss's bus picks her up at 8:40 and Mister Man needs to get to daycare/kindergarten by 9am. Plenty of time, especially as he usually gets his shoes and coat on by himself so he can come outside and see Little Miss onto the bus and wave goodbye. All we have to do then is grab his backpack and her blanket and head out the door.

It's frequently 9:02 when I'm pulling out the garage, and I can't figure it out.

How about when I have a yoga class at 6pm on Monday nights? That's fun because I get to fight rush hour traffic, so I always allow myself a little over a half hour to get there instead of my usual twenty minute jaunt. I get home from work a little after five and say hi to the wee ones who are usually eating dinner. I ask them how their days were, then gather my yoga mat and gym bag. I make sure to start my collecting of items by 5:14.

I turn on the car, and it's 5:25. And by the time I make it up to the yoga studio, it's after 6 and the class has started.

What gives? When I open the door to my garage, am I knocked unconscious by something on a daily basis for six minutes? Is there a time portal as I step through the actual portal? Do I get stuck in slow motion as I try to leave the house?

There has to be a rational explanation, right? And it couldn't be that the clock in the kitchen is wrong. Definitely not that.

You need to get those clocks hooked up to that international automatic clock thingie. Synchronize, girl! Synchronize!

Or at least change your kitchen clock so it's 6 minutes later than the one in your car...

I agree with melisa your clocks need to all be on the same time!
afterall, its just a jump to the left, and a step to the ri-i-i-ght, hehehe

Einstein's theory of relativity suggests that the faster you go the slower time gets. Could be the problem, perhaps?

I believe that the Peter Principle might apply here, too, whatever that is. Or, as my Nana used to say, "The furtherer I go, the behinder I get!"

Sounds like you need to move your clocks forward 6 minutes...or would that be back...sheesh, now I'm all confused...

My brain must be about 6 minutes back stuck in the garage with you.

I'm so with you. I swear we are out of the house by 7:30 am, but when I look at the car clock, it's nearly 7:50!

Is the clock in the car wrong??? Synch all those bad boys up and see if you can find those 6 minutes!

Cookie November 17, 2008 at 9:01 PM

LOL! I was going to vote for one of the clocks being wrong ;)

Melisa - I forgot to mention this, but ummm I actually moved the microwave clock up four minutes, and I still lose the EXACT same amount of time.

Mabunny - OH! And I had managed to not get that song going through my head. Now it totally is!

J Cosmo Newbery (ok I need a shorter name to type) ;) - Yes YES, that's it! You're brilliant!

Veggie Mom - Peter Principle. I know I've heard that one before somewhere. I think I'm going to need to google it. Maybe that's it?

Melissa - Hey, when I find those missing six minutes, I'll return your brain at the same time. Deal?

ElleBee - Welcome! Ooo. Your time warp is even worse than mine. Rough going, isn't it?

Debbie - No, the one in the car I synchronize with the radio, so I know it's good. Maybe I just need to punch in some random numbers inside and see how that goes.

Cookie - Thanks! Why does no one believe that I've got a portal in my garage that bends time? It works just fine when we go out the front door!

How very wild! Maybe there is a blackout kind of thing going on because it sounds like you are losing time! ;)

The promptness of me is almost OCD. I don't ever like to be late - for ANYTHING. It's almost shameful that I'm early to everything. I also have my clocks set fast in my house, drives the hub nuts.

Outnumbered2to1 November 18, 2008 at 9:19 AM

The phone is your answer. I go by the time on my phone for EVERYTHING even when I'm in the house. But I'm crazy anal like that.

Jen November 18, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Isn't is amazing how we lose time? I'm thinking it's some sort of "mommy time". I feel like no matter what I'm doing I'm always later than I thought. The clock in my car doesn't work however, so I don't know how much time I've "lost" until I arrive at my destination so it doesn't bother me all that much. :) Maybe that's the key.....don't look at the clock in your car at all! :)

Michelle November 18, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Lex - Funny... I was just thinking about you this morning, and now you post on the blog! And ummm yeah. I have things set fast -- or so I thought! Of course with kids, even when I'm running early, somehow I still manage to be late!

Outnumbered2to1 - That's actually what I usually use as I keep breaking watches (they just stop working on my wrist), and I've given up. I carry my cell with me in my pocket everywhere. Of course with hands full of everything and trying to usher the wee ones out the door, using the phone gets tricky!

Jen - It is, isn't it? Unfortunately, I have to look at the clock because it's right next to the song titles and Mister Man ALWAYS wants to know what's playing so he reads the song titles, but then I have to verify for him. *sigh*

Darci November 18, 2008 at 3:36 PM

I've even tried making the house clocks earlier. Doesn't help. Its the Wee Ones Warp. Really is. DS is almost 6. Maybe this stops around 7 years old?

Karen November 18, 2008 at 5:04 PM

Synchronize your watches!

Michelle November 18, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Darci - Let me know if it does start then. PLEASE! And thank you for believing me ;)

Karen - Wellll it's hard to tell if they are or aren't because of the time I lose every time I go outside! How do you synchronize that?

WeaselMomma November 19, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Set the car clock back by 6 minutes. The kitchen clock is of course right.

Michelle November 19, 2008 at 10:20 PM

Weaselmomma - Right. So ummm how do I explain being even later than normal then to Sunday School and preschool and work and everywhere else? :)
