Dear Brother: Little Notes From Little Miss

I'm lucky, and I know I am. Little Miss and Mister Man love each other. They play well together. They voluntarily spend time together and rarely fight. I don't often see siblings get along as well as they do. I adore it, and I hope that it continues into adulthood, especially if I keep my nose out of their relationship.

Every once in awhile one will annoy the other one, sometimes to get attention, but usually unintentionally. Unintentionally as in "I'm thinking only of myself and not how you might feel about what I'm doing" - which really is rather normal, I think.

I noticed yesterday when I went to put laundry away that Little Miss had added a couple little notes to her door. I peered closer to take a look and started giggling. I really don't have to worry about anyone walking over her as she gets older. She knows what she wants, and she's going to make her opinions known, one way or the other.

"Rules for my room. No taking out my marcks"

Ok, so I have to be honest. I have no idea what "marcks" are, and I forgot to ask her. I'm not sure if this is a reference to toys, if she means trucks, or if maybe it's bookmarks. Regardless, she's setting the stage.

"No reading my books"

Why yes, yes this is an issue. As the wee ones play so well together, they have many similar interests. The books they get for gifts or check out from the library tend to be on the same subjects. They actually checked out the same book from their school libraries one week. And so Mister Man will pick up the book she's reading but has set down for the moment and start reading it himself, frequently losing her place. Apparently she's had enough.

"No more playing with my toys only your toys"

Apparently she's had it. Interestingly, to my knowledge, he has never broken any of her toys. I can only imagine that he wants to play with the toys that she's trying to play with or that he wants to play one game and she wants to play another - with the same toys. Yay imagination and made up games? This would explain why I've found them playing in Mister Man's room the past two mornings instead of playing in her room as they usually do.

So how many days before there are rebuttal notes with rules showing up on Mister Man's door?

Too cute! Pretty soon they are going to have 'conversations' on their doors! It's sweet that they like the same toys. It makes playing together much more fun!

That is hilarious. I think it's great that your kids play together & get along, my brother and I never really had that as a kid and I wish we would have. we are very close now but I think our age difference hurt us.

This is so funny. Reminds me of some signs my own kids made when they were younger.

Smiling.... I love a girl who knows what she wants!

hilarious! we've got the note writing going on over here too - I think she means markers!

Glad to see she communicated her frustration in a positive way. Yay for her!!!!

My daughter is just learning to write, but often asks me to make signs for her door, specifically regarding what her little brother can and can not do/touch/enter, etc. I have to remind her that he's younger than she is and can't read yet either. LOL

Sandra - Don't give them any ideas! At that point, I'll have to get them dry erase boards, and it'll be just like college ;)

Heather - I love that they do, but I don't want to push them together. My mom did that to my sister and I. While I remember playing with her a lot as a kid, we don't speak as adults really... and that's sad.

Tara - What, you mean the wee ones aren't the first children to do this? ;) I'm shocked!

Joanna - Oh boy howdy does she know what she wants! She'll do well as an adult.

Teresa - Ummm she'd better not mean markers. They aren't allowed upstairs, which has been strictly enforced ever since the "color on our bed with crayon" incident of 2011.

Tami - She has, although it doesn't always work. And she isn't always to positive in her communication... but who is?

Jamie - That's so sweet. I love the thought behind it, and the lack of understanding about what it takes to read. Kids are so cute. And sweet.

I love it! I wish my girls would communicate by notes instead of yelling :) Maybe I'll tack some of my own rules on my door -- like "No asking for snacks while I am in the shower."

I love this - my small people write each other notes too :) And since my small girl is the older of the two, the small dude frequently gets the brunt of the bossing :)

Does she mean markers? That was my first thought :)

how great that she's communicating and practicing her skills! (no. really.) but LOL. those notes would be the beginning of WW3 in our home.

These are the best!

Cindy - I should start a new post of "notes we never thought we'd need to write to our children." THAT one would definitely go on it, no?

Extraordinary Mommy - Interestingly, my daughter is the younger one, and she does most of the bossing. My son does his fair share, I suppose, but ... it's definitely not one sided. And NO no markers!

Julie - She is practicing her skills. And her spelling leaves a lot to be desired since she's learning in Spanish. She'll get there though ;)

Meghan - Aren't they fun? Just wait until you have them, too!
