An Update From The Potty Training Wars

Last Wednesday evening, my husband was putting Little Miss to bed while I was working with Mister Man. I found out then that she was out of Pull-Ups. Ummm, what?

It was 6:30 at night and time for her bed. No one had bothered to mention the dearth of Pull-Ups until that point. Costco had a sale on Pull-Ups starting the next day. Thursday mornings are sheet changing days in my house.

I decided to try one more time to see if she was ready to stay dry overnight, knowing that I had a plastic mat under her sheets just in case. I explained to her what we were doing, and she repeated after me, "Body. Hey! Body! Listen up. I'm going without a Pull-Up tonight. You need to wake me up if you have to go p0tty. Got it? You'd better!" We were as set as we were going to be.

I woke her up for a p0tty run when I went to bed, and she went.

The next morning, her bed was wet. I commiserated with her a bit and asked what happened. Did you wake up all wet this morning?

No.

Ummmm you got wet after you woke up?

Yes. I woke up this morning, and I had to go p0tty and I forgot I wasn't wearing a Pull-Up anymore.

Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech.

Ummm what? Wait, you mean to tell me that you stayed dry all night long, only to wake up in the morning and wet your bed simply because you were too lazy to walk down the hall to the bathroom? Are you kidding me?

There are no more Pull-Ups.

Or there weren't. After our little discussion, she was dry on Thursday night. And on Friday night. And on Saturday night. Since then, she's wet her bed once or more a night every night, even with both my husband and I waking her in the middle of the night. So yeah, when I went to Costco today, I bought more Pull-Ups.

When I started potty training my 2 yr old this month, I was like "Oh, piece of cake!"

Gah: I don't miss those days a BIT.

The good news is, she won't go to college in Pull ups. :)

We just switched over to pull-ups and they aren't fooling my daughter one bit. She calls them diapers. But she can change herself now, guess that is something?

Good luck with the night training. Its so hard when they are fast asleep. The body just has to figure it out on its own. Glad to hear she's not terribly frustrated.

Ouch! I am so glad that these days are over in my house.

Oh, she's got you figured out... Maybe after the holidays, you can crack the whip again, eh? Lil stinker.

Oh, I am so sorry, Michelle. I feel for you. As I told you before, my middle son was a bed-wetter off-and-on till he was almost 12. He took care of taking his sheets to the laundry room any morning that they were wet and then putting on a new fitted sheet. As time went by, his bed-wetting became more and more infrequent. I wish you and Little Miss the best.

My son was a little like that too. If he was playing, he just didn't want to stop to go to the bathroom. He could, he just wouldn't.

One Petal At A Time - Ummm yeah. Another year. You do realize that Little Miss is almost 5 1/2, right?

Melisa - I won't miss them when they're gone either. Shocking. And no, she won't, which is why I don't freak out about it too much. It just galling that she'll admit to such laziness :)

Mary - Interesting, as Pull-Ups are NOT diapers in our house per my daughter. I think if she were frustrated it would work better though....

WeaselMomma - I'm jealous. Very jealous.

Tracey - Doesn't she, though? She's a total stinker, and I get if she truly can't stay dry and have no issues with that. It's the "I didn't feel like going down the hall" part of it that I have an issue with.

Pat - Thanks, I appreciate it. She will grow out of it eventually, although I know we'll have setbacks along the way. I just hope it's sooner rather than later for my sake ;)

Tara - The playing is frustrating, but I sorta get that (we had that issue for a long time during the days), but the night time dry and wake up but can't be bothered to get out of bed... that to me is a little different!

Oh honey, I'm glad you're "going first"......you're going to be able to walk me away from so many ledges with my own wee ones someday! ;) JU

Michelle December 11, 2010 at 10:57 PM

Jen - You realize that since I've gone first this means I get to give you all the loud obnoxious toys, and mine are too old for you to retaliate, too, right? ;)

anymommy December 11, 2010 at 11:47 PM

Oh, this made me feel so much less alone.

Michelle December 13, 2010 at 2:56 PM

Stacey - You have four kids... you're NEVER alone. Oh. Wait. Yeah. You do realize that while writing this I was thinking of your lovely drawings from a couple years ago ;)

Don't ask me about my potty training wars with my kids. I cringe to think of those days.

Love that spaghetti picture :)

Kim Moldofsky December 15, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Ha! What Melisa said. I was worried one of my boys was going to be in pull-ups in junior high. It took forever or so it seemed to get him to keep dry at night.

Sometimes we'd get comments like those your daughter made, or he'd stay dry for nights in a row, leading us to believe he had the control, in theory, but did not use it. Agh, so frustrating.

Michelle December 16, 2010 at 10:42 PM

Kelly - Yes, but you realize that Jillian is younger than Little Miss. And you're DONE. But yeah... that spaghetti pic was precious. It made it onto the annual calendar.

Kim - Oh I know she will be done someday. It is just taking her a few years longer than Mister Man (oh yeah... don't compare my children). It's the attitude behind it, not that it happens :)

Mrs4444 December 18, 2010 at 11:33 PM

Boy, that's tough! Good luck!!

Michelle December 20, 2010 at 3:29 PM

Mrs4444 - Yep. But ohhhh so in tune with her personality :) Someday she'll be dry all night every night.
