We Did It!

Phew! I have so much to say right now, but I'm utterly exhausted. While I may have been able to function somewhat on that college no sleep schedule, I am at my breaking point and need to head to bed and get a good night's sleep tonight very soon!

There will be lots of posts coming up, but I have one that just can't wait.

I mentioned that Melisa and I have been training for the 5K for BlogHer. We both completed the C25K program before we left for BlogHer, but running in New York with lots of heat and humidity, through Central Park, at 6:15am after little sleep is daunting to say the least.

Since we were running so early, we knew we wouldn't have a huge cheering section, we decided to have a virtual one instead. Before we left for BlogHer, we purchased matching shirts for our run, and at BlogHer we asked people to sign them (when we remembered to have our shirts with us!) to support us while we ran. Thank you to everyone who signed - the messages were great!

And run we did. As not fun as it was to get up so early on Friday morning, we did it. We got down to the lobby, put on our tutus (supporting Tanner!), and headed out towards Central Park. We walked the first block or so as our warm up, and then we began to run.

There was a nice group of eight or so who ran with us, which made it really fun. While we had a bit of difficulty navigating the lower loop of Central Park a few times, but the maps we had and eight brains working on it got us through. Although a few teams got lost and did some extra mileage, we did not - somehow.

The running wasn't always easy, especially when we had to wait for stoplights on our way to and from the park and when we had to stop to figure out where we were on the map. Stopping and then starting up with the running again makes it really hard, but that's really about the only walking or stopping I did.

I ran the 5K. And I now need to update my shirt with the messages to say that I completed my first 5K! Melisa did, too - go us!

Interestingly, I had a really hard time eating breakfast after running. I just couldn't cool down (it's that whole not sweating thing), and I had no blood in my stomach to digest food for a good forty-five minutes.

Once I had eaten my breakfast, Melisa presented me with a gift. She's such a sweetheart and so thoughtful. She had a beautiful card she'd written that absolutely cracked me up - and yes, I'm saving it! And then she gave me a necklace, too.

The really scary thing is that I almost bought her a nearly identical necklace. When we'd wandered Chinatown the day prior, we found a jewelry store with all sorts of fun stuff. I discovered a running shoe necklace that I thought would be a perfect first 5K fit. I was going to buy one for each of us to celebrate finishing the 5K. Buuuuut everyone left the store, and I didn't have time to purchase them before we had to move on, so I skipped it.

Apparently it's a good thing I did skip it. Melisa and I are sometimes just a little bit too alike for our comfort. It's freaky.

Melisa - Of course you were! So glad you were there to do it with me. btw when my mom saw my necklace today, she wanted to know why you got me a baby shoe. *smacking head*

Tara - Thanks. We were so happy to find them, and so nice of everyone to sign them for us!

Pat - Thanks :) Unfortunately, I did something to my ankle, so I won't be running for a little while right now :(

Lisa - Thanks. I think Melisa did a great job making it special. I love that she was there to do it with me.

Megryansmom - Thanks! I needed all the support I could get :)

Karen - Yep, definitely great minds ;) It's scary how similar we are sometimes.

Kelly - Hey, set a goal, and it's amazing what you can do. Did I mention that I finished my magazine pile, too?

Stacey - Thanks! I'm so bummed I missed you again. San Diego? Or hopefully before ;)

Marcy - It was a huge accomplishment for me. And not being a runner, I'm still amazed that I did it. It felt so good to be done!

Way to go my dear you rock! I love the shirt idea how fun is that. You two look adorable in your tutus :)

Look like Blogher was fun, I so wish I could go to one. Maybe one time.

She is too sweet what a special gift. I love you thought about doing the same thing before that.

Way to go, girls! And how cute are y'all in your tutus?!?

You guys are amazing! I'm so glad I got to meet you & sign those shirts! xo

Michelle August 13, 2010 at 8:42 PM

Alexis - That was a great idea... and obviously not mine :) It was a pretty cool keepsake nonetheless though!

Lucy - Ummm not as cute as some of the other women. Some of them REALLY rocked their tutus, but we had a blast with them. While we were running, people were so curious about them.

Patty - Absolutely. I'm so glad you were able to sign them and we were able to hang with you, too!

Hooray! I'm really happy for you both!! I haven't been running, but I have been exercising a bunch with weights and my bike. I will be sad when the weather pushes me inside! :(

LOVE the necklace!!

Congrats on completing the C25K!! I'm on Week 4 right now myself.. it's a tough week, probably the first time I've been challenged so far!

Mrs4444 - Whatever you're doing, you're doing the right thing. Six pounds in 10 days? And yes - she did a great job with it, didn't she? I LOVE the necklace.

CurlyJ - Go you! The weeks are sometimes challenging, but I'm still amazed at what I can do somehow after keeping up with it - and sometimes repeating weeks. Thanks - and keep it up for you, too!
