Is It 9pm Yet?

Go check out my giveaway here. Another week to go, and you've got a great shot!

***

Not unlike so many of you, I'm exhausted. Completely. I wake up with circles under my eyes wishing for just a few more minutes (ok, hours) of sleep. I drag through my days, yawning away. And I hate that.

Since the time changed, I've made a conscious effort to get more sleep. By 9pm, I am finishing up whatever I'm doing and heading upstairs. I may read for a bit or watch a little Food Network, but I'm getting to sleep much, much earlier now.

And it's helping. A little. But I'm still tired even when I'm "sleeping" nine or more hours a night. Why? Eh, take a look below.

Top Ten Reasons I Can't Sleep At Night

10) Mooooooom, I can't find Snowy! When entering Little Miss's room, Snowy is on her bed, approximately nine inches from her body, which is approximately eight inches further than where she searched.

9) It's 4:40am. If I get to sleep now, I'll be able to have another hour and a half of sleep. Unless my husband's alarm wakes me up. Then I'd only get forty minutes of sleep. That's not nearly enough. Maybe if I start counting backwards. Ugh, what if I get to zero and am still awake? That would be really depressing. Then I definitely wouldn't be able to sleep again. Should I turn on the tv for a few minutes? Maybe not. At this hour, it's only infomercials, and I don't want to listen to those.... Yep, that would be my internal monologue.

8) Mom. Pssst. Mom. Mom. Mom. Do you want to hear about the dream I just had? It's really funny. Not at 2am, thank you very much.

7) Why am I so cold? Yikes! Oh. I don't have a comforter anymore. grrrr.

6) That would be a light shining directly into my eye. Why oh why did I place the bed in such a position that whenever my husband opens the closet door and turns on the light to choose clothing for the day (because it's impossible to choose clothing the night before), the bulb is exactly in my eye. I'm still debating rearranging the room to avoid this, but the window and door configuration make it a tad difficult.

5) Ummm, did you read this post?

4) Or this one?

3) YES! Go. GO GO! Awww, I can't believe he got tackled. HOW did he not manage to score there? I can hear that. Through closed doors. And from a floor away. This is not a fun way to be jerked awake.

2) Moooom, I have to go potty. Mooooom. Mooooom, I have to go potty. While Little Miss a) is perfectly capable of going potty by herself during the day, b) has absolutely zero interest in learning to stay dry overnight and c) is the most independent little cuss on the planet except when it suits her, if she decides she has to go potty, she insists on getting permission in the middle of the night. During naptime, she has no compunctions about getting up and going two or three times of course.

And the number one reason?

Mooooooooooom, I don't feel so good. Mom! Urp.

And if you'll excuse me, it's 8:58. I need to start shutting down my comptuer and heading upstairs.

Oh I dread that number 10! eww I can't even imagine...But I do the same thing when I look at the clock and think to myself "Ok if I fall asleep now, I can get 5hours....if I fall asleep now I can get 4.5 hours!"

Sweet Dreams?????? Duct tape and removing the light bulb would be a great start.

These are the things they never tell you when you're contemplating becoming a parent.

Sounds like a busy night! Absloutely HATE that #1 reason :S

I am so sorry! I know exactly how you feel, all except the mom parts, but I do have a husband that wakes me to ask questions in the night and a dog that gets the urka gurkas in the night. Does that count? LOL!

I am actually sleeping much better now that it is cooling down here, but that is usually the case. Plus it has just been so busy here lately that I'm truly tired enough to sleep. When I can't fall asleep right away, I first make sure my feet aren't freezing (I keep fuzzy socks by the bed, which works perfectly) and then I lay there and literally pray. Not for sleep; I need something that takes my mind off me and lack of sleep. So I say thank you for everything that was a blessing that day. It works well!! Not always, of course, because I definitely have my share of nights where I don't fall asleep till 2:30 or 4, or even 6 (ughhhhhhhhh). But it works most of the time!

Hang in there!!

Once they cut that umbilical cord, I think the idea of a good night's sleep flies off to never never land :)

Does it ever get better?

Let's see...I stopped having night visitors when my boys were about 9, 11 and 13. I told them they could each just bring their pillow and comforter and sleep on the floor in our room if they were scared. One morning I awoke to three little boys asleep on our floor under their comforters.

I remember those days of constant tiredness. It shall pass for you, too, some day.

Roxane - Ummm yeah. Fortunately, that's my husband's job!

WeaselMomma - Yeah but you know those math teachers. If I removed the light bulb, he'd find some wonky solution....

Karen - Oh there are so many more. SO many more. Someday I'll compile a list, and teen pregnancy will disappear ;)

MaBunny - I'm working on it. We had a late night last night when we went to the circus, but the 9pm bedtime is definitely making a difference!

Cookie - I do seem to have busy nights. Maybe it's my fault for such busy days?

Angela - Ooo, your husband wakes you up to ask you questions? Boo to him for that!

Melisa - Of COURSE it's you :)

Life with Kaishon - Uhhh yeah. Total proof right there. My how my standards have fallen.

Swishy - It's frustrating, isn't it?

Kelly - At least we made it to the umbilical cord cutting, right? So many people stop sleeping midway through pregnancy.

Unknown Mami - You're asking the wrong person!

Pat - Ohhh that is so not what I wanted to hear. 9? 11? 13? Yikes. I was hoping more for ohh I don't know, 4 and 6 ;)

Maybe you could ask your husband if he could use a flashlight in the morning to find his clothes.

I try to go to bed at 9 p.m. to so I can get my 7-8 hours of sleep. Usually it works! I could see why it would be harder to do with young kids. Pleasant dreams.

Visiting from Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop.

Karen - I'd love it if it would work, but knowing my husband he'd end up turning on the light to find the flashlight ;) I'd have more luck getting him to set out his clothes the night before... and that isn't happening so far!

Pat November 7, 2009 at 12:51 PM

Sorry, Michelle, now that I think of it, they were younger than that, more like 5, 7 and 9. But at least by that age they hardly even woke me up. They'd just tiptoe into our bedroom and curl up on the floor. The first one there curled up closest to my side of the bed and I would stroke his head and say, "It's OK, I'm right here." ...and we'd all go back to sleep.

Michelle March 26, 2010 at 10:44 PM

Pat - Awwww, that's so sweet. The wee ones know that there is no sleeping with Mommy (I'm a notoriously light sleeper and can NOT get back to sleep once woken up). I love how connected they were to you like that though.

I can definitely relate to number 9. I dread thinking about how I'm going to we woken up by my husband's alarm before I ACTUALLY need to get up. That's why I bought a LARK. It's this silent alarm that wakes you with a vibration. You wear this comfortable bracelet that has a sensor and you set an alarm through the app on you iPhone. The bracelet not only wakes my husband silently and allows me to sleep longer, it tracks how long he slept, how many times he woke up, and how long it took him to go to sleep.

An extra hour and a half of sleep has made a HUGE difference.
