Every day when I am the carpool driver on the way home from school, I ask each of the four children in my car what their favorite parts of the day were. I get varying responses from "playing with Legos" to "building a hideout" to "having a green day" (which means not getting in trouble) to learning about volcanoes. You get the idea.

It's generally a lot of fun, and they all get a kick out of each others favorite parts. Plus, it's a good way for me to spend at least a portion of the drive without anyone fighting or arguing, as the two kids not in my family that I transport tend to be a little more ummm uncooperative than my wee ones sometimes.

On Friday, the first grade girl told me that her favorite part of the day was when a boy stared at her. Yikes. Granted, she's seven and slightly on the older side for first grade, but I don't remember being interested in boys at that age. And Little Miss is ummm definitely old for her years (see the previous post), and I'm not ready for this.

I took a deep breath and tried not to jump to conclusions.

Sooooo why was that your favorite part of the day?

I liked it when he stared at me.

You did, why did you like it when he stared at you?

Because I like him.

Really. Why do you like this boy?

Because he looks at me. (Oooo, good logic - go for the boys who show interest!)

Why else do you like him?

Because he's not crazy like some of the other boys. (Apparently the bad boy thing hasn't started up yet?)

That's a good reason. Any other reason?

Well, he makes me laugh. He's kind of silly. But in a good way, not in a way where he gets in trouble. (huh, she's using good logic again. Where was she when I was a teenager?)

He sounds like an interesting boy. So what does it mean that you like him?

Oh, it means that I like it when he looks at me. But that's it. Why?

Uhhhh, no reason. No reason at all. We'll stick with the just looking at her for now. And please, PLEASE let's hope that the real interest in boys holds off for awhile longer.

Lol! What a conversation. I don't think you have to panic about the boy stuff until at least third grade. It's kind of scary, though, to think a seven year old knows enough to know it makes her feel good wjen a boy looks at her. Hmm. Food for thought.

The kids seem to be younger and younger when they start to become aware of attention from the opposite sex. There's a boy in my son's first grade class who claims to have "plenty of girlfriends". A harem already?

Oh my! lol. I haven't run across that yet while subbing, although I did have a boy in kinder last year tell another girl that he wanted to see her panties - needless to say hes a bit of a trouble maker....

LOL! My boys have started talking about girls too. THey like getting girls to chase them on the playground. It does seem to be starting young. And the logic does seem to be missing!

Oh my! LOL at least its nothing more serious stare :)

By the time she's a teen all logic gos out of the window. I think hormones act as a logic blocker.

Let's also hope that her logic reasoning remains. Or maybe not - if she liked every boy who stared at her it could get ugly.

I have empathy for her mom.

I truly don't remember when my kids first started noticing other little boys and girls. They are 20 and 16 now, I may have just blocked that memory from my brain.

Well, it's bound to start sometime, but I wish it wouldn't start until they're 30.

It always starts earlier than we are ready for. My son has a new girlfriend and she's a year older than him. A COUGAR!

Oh man, I hope it doesn't really start so young. You'll know it's serious when they start chasing each other at recess.

Hyacynth - Yeah, precious, ain't it? Here's hoping that seven year old stays in this phase for awhile.

Kelly - They do, don't they? Although I admit to being part of Andrew's harem in second grade. Me, Katie Wall, and two other Katies whose last names I forget. :)

MaBunny - Yikes! I bet he's also the youngest child. Or at least I hope he is.

Cookie - Actually, Mister Man has been telling me about Chase on the playground. Hmmm. I didn't think about it that way.

Roxane - For now. but you know what a stare turns into ;)

WeaselMomma - You aren't exactly helping here!

Karen - Yikes, that could definitely get ugly. Or from the sidelines, entertaining.

Tara - So do I. Her mom has her hands full.... And thank you for not making me panic any more than I already am :)

Unknown Mami - Maybe a little younger than 30. I don't want to be an OLD grandma, after all!

Gina - No no no... a Cougar is a woman over 35. I learned that from my husband (and then posted on it).

RAS - Ummm don't say that. They're already doing that!
