I'm Not Always The Sharpest Knife In The Drawer

Truly, I'm not. I know it come as a shock, but sometimes my brain doesn't work quite the way I'd hope that it would.

Take this afternoon for example. I had the new PTO coming to my house for a get together (yay!), so of course I was doing some cleaning and straightening up. You know the drill. That's why I was cleaning the cracks between the leaves in the kitchen table. Because that's the priority when company is coming over in two hours and I've yet to make the munchies I'd promised.

Anyway, I was cleaning the crevices - a chore that I now do on a fairly regular basis - thinking about how this falls into the list of jobs I never thought I'd be doing. I was trying to figure out how I could turn this into a blog post (because, you know, this is where the mind wanders when trying not to be grossed out by the gunk that has made it stuck solidly onto the sides of the leaf. In fact, I think the wee ones owe me a manicure after this one. Be grateful there are no pictures.

As I debated the merits of a top ten list of jobs I'd never thought I'd be doing, I realized that I had already covered #2 wiping other people's bottoms earlier this week.

I sighed and continued scrubbing. I noticed that there were far more crumbs on the side where Mister Man sat than where my husband did. At least with Little Miss sitting at the head of the table, her crumbs stayed on the surface, which is so much easier to clean.

Finally, it dawned on me. Mister Man sits on the side of the table. Where he has cracks for leaves to his right and to his left. Where he can so easily make a mess.

Duhhh.

He now sits at the foot of the table, and my husband and I sit near the leaves. I'm a little embarrassed that it's taken me a good three years to figure that one out.

OH! And for all you nice people who liked the banana boat idea I had on Tuesday, Laura at Hey, What's For Dinner, Mom? has a picture of it posted for her Best Food/Foodie Foto contest this week. Can you please take a quick moment and go vote for me? I could really use some chocolate this week. Pretty please?

Cute post. I have too many kids for the crack thing to work. My youngest daughter does a pretty good job with the beveled edges as well as the cracks. Does the madness ever stop?
My daughter just started kindergarten, too! Your son is precious!

I wouldn't have even thought about that.

Voted for ya, darling. :)

Ummm, are you nesting or something? Cleaning the cracks on the table? It sounds like something I would have demanded be done today on our cleaning spree! lol.
Going to vote for you now.

Thanks for the cleaning tip! I have been doing it for 12 years and I never figured out that I should shuffle my messy eaters around. So you are way sharper than me :) I voted for you too!

Ugh. You just reminded me that's it been months since I cleaned between the leaves. I am now sickened at the thought of what I may find.

glad you finally figured it out, lol!

I can't remember the last time I cleaned between the leaves of my table...
Ok, shamed in to going to clean them now... LOL!

Melissa - That is the trick, isn't it? My mantra was "two hands, two kids" for a long time. But I'm finding the two kids helps in a lot of ways -- minivans, table seating, hotel rooms, etc.

RAS - Aww, thanks! And trust me, it took me a good three years. But I still feel better now.

Hyacynth - Some people do spring cleaning. I do back to school cleaning. I'm finally tackling the office. The end table is empty. The island is cleaned off. If only school started up more often!

Kelly - Huh. I'm feeling better and better about myself. Then again, Mister Man already has asked when he can move back and pouted when I told him he'd have to stop being messy first ... and then pointed to Daddy's messy area and told him it didn't look like anytime soon!

WeaselMomma - Oh, it was nasty. And I do this on a somewhat regular basis. I've decided that maybe a new table is in order that doesn't have leaves.

Marcy - Umm, yeah. Now if I could just figure everything ELSE out!

Jennifer - Hee hee... that was so not my intention, but I hope you'rs are cleaner than mine were.

Cookie - Isn't it though? So sad, so sad....

Sometimes it's all about perspective, isn't it? Too bad perspective usually comes when you're elbow-deep in gunk.

I'll go vote for you.

Oh, I think I was too late because I wasn't able to vote. Boo!

Elizabeth September 2, 2009 at 2:11 PM

I just tried to vote too. I guess I waited too long!

Melisa Wells September 2, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Genius!

You're lucky...*I* never figured that out. :)

Michelle September 3, 2009 at 9:08 AM

Karen - It's absolutely all about perspective! And ummm fortunately this time, I was only wrist deep in gunk.

Unknown Mami - Thank you for the effort. And somehow, I actually DID win. I'm so excited for my chocolate :)

Elizabeth - Thank you, too! Apparently the banana boats had just enough nostalgia to them to win. Yay!

Melisa - Oh I don't know if I'd go that far... but I'll take it anyway! Somehow, I don't see your perfect boys stuffing food into the cracks though.
