A Chip Off The Old Block

This morning, Mister Man slept in a little, and he didn't have to be to daycare until 9, so I let him. When I took Little Miss down for breakfast, I peeked in but he was still sleeping.

A few minutes later, I went upstairs and saw that he was sitting up in bed. As I pushed his door open to say good morning, he pulled the covers over something and looked up guiltily. "Good morning, Mom," he told me peeking up at me to see if I'd noticed.

I smiled at him. "Kiddo, if you want to read in the morning after you wake up, that's ok."

"Huh?"

"Yep. It isn't ok to read at night when you're supposed to be sleeping, but if you wake up and have time to read before you need to get up and go, that's perfectly fine."

His face visibly brightened. "Oh, good!" And he uncovered Good Morning Gorilla - his latest Magic Treehouse book - and hopped out of bed.

Apparently me taking away the book that he was reading the other night about forty-five minutes after bedtime sunk in. And now he's hiding his reading. I remember those days. I remember hiding the flashlight under the covers and reading. I remember feeling like I was getting away with something.

And now? Now I'm the mom, hiding the smile at the joy my child finds in reading, so happy that this is something he sees as a pleasure and not something to fear. I can only hope that he feels the same way two and five and ten years from now.

How fun is that? So glad your little one has found the joy of reading. I think that is an okay transgression.
Thanks so much for the comment love on my blog. Yes, she is a dressage horse and that's a double bridle. My trainer is riding her 4th level these days. I do ride her in a pelham myself as she can be so strong.
Anyway, do come back for some more giggles. Glad you liked the post.

Aw, so sweet!

And much better than jumping out of bed and going to turn on the tube. :)

Good for him!

That is so wonderful! My little guy loves his books too :) It's such a wonderful time when they get excited about reading. I hope he enjoys reading always. I'm sure Little Miss gets a kick out of reading time together with Mister Man too:) My two young ones like to curl up and read together. It's nice at that age!

Oh how sweet! Nicole, at any one time is surrounded by 3-4 books, just like me! lol - Reading is a wonderful thing - I'm glad he likes it!

Mine have always loved to read. I loved catching them too!

Jen - It's an ok transgression... unless it's two plus hours past bedtime of an already tired child :)

Life with Kaishon - They're cool books, aren't they? I love what he's picking up from them, including some history that I never learned.

Melisa - True. Would you believe that neither of the wee ones knows how to turn on the tv?

Cookie - Me, too! Of course staying exactly the same might make it hard for him to get a date for prom someday ;)

septembermom - Oh she does. She loves him to read to her, and vice versa -- most of the time!

MaBunny - Good to know that she's still loving it at her age. You're doing something right there.

Debbie - It always intrigues me the kids who love to read and those who don't. I wish I could figure out how to foster a lifelong love of it. In both the wee ones! And yeah... catching them is kinda fun, isn't it?

Phew, I thought you were gonna say he was masterbating! I know, I know ... EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Manic - Only you. Steph, he's FIVE! I know he's advanced but ummmm not like that ;)

I pray that my kids will love to read as much as I do. Hanna just does not like sitting still long enough for a story to be read most days. *Sigh*

Heather - Be patient. Little Miss couldn't sit for more than 20 seconds with a book for EVER. But she's just now starting to sit to have whole stories and books read to her. It'll come... especially if you model it for her :)
