Blame It On The Frosting

Today after church, we went into the basement for social hour, as we do every Sunday. All the children play off to the side with whatever they find while the adults tend to be at the other end of the gathering room, eating and chatting.

I knew the wee ones were tired -- especially since they'd spent so much time with Grandma and Grandpa the past couple days (yep, Grandma and Grandpa who don't believe that sleep is important). I didn't realize quite how tired until I heard Mister Man crying because some little boy pinched him hard on the leg.

I told Mister Man to tell the boy not to pinch him and just move on. He did, but he was still a little snuffly. A little bit later, I happened to be looking up at him when I saw him wipe out. I strolled over to him, knowing that he'd probably be somewhat upset, as he's a bit of a delicate flower.

He was screaming. In fact, he was starting to throw up. Not a good sign, and I quickened my pace to him. He couldn't calm down, so Daddy took him outside with a cup in case he really started throwing up. Mommy doesn't do puke.

When he fell, there were no other kids near him. He didn't trip over anything. He wasn't turning or looking another way, he simply tripped over his own feet, from what I could see. Yep, that's my husband's child alright!

He finally calmed down, but his arm was still sore. My husband brushed it off, but I asked him if it just hurt or if it hurt when he moved his arm. Yeah, you guessed his answer, didn't you?

Bummer is that my parents were taking the wee ones to go see Peter Pan this afternoon and had already bought tickets. If his arm were broken, a couple of hours really won't make a difference. As long as I get him to the ER in a reasonable amount of time, no harm done. I asked him what he wanted to do, and he decided to suck it up and go see Peter Pan. Shocking, I know.

On the way to the car, his arm started hurting more, and he changed his mind. You know that's not good. I couldn't see any swelling, and it wasn't bruised, so I asked him again. And he changed his mind and decided to go to Peter Pan. So he went to Peter Pan.

And I just got back from three hours in the ER to find out that Mister Man has a broken growth plate in his elbow. We don't know what stage it is (apparently there are four?), but I have to call an orthopedist tomorrow to try to get an appointment to see him.

It was so sad when the X-ray techs had him turn his arm various ways and straighten it for the X-rays. It really hurt him, but you could see how brave he was trying to be. Completely heartbreaking... until he asked me why we had aprons on. And why they were heavy. And why X-rays couldn't penetrate lead. That's when I knew he was feeling at least a little back to normal.

Swimming is out for awhile, as is bike riding, etc. I think that's the part that he's most bummed about, and I can't blame him. He's going to school tomorrow, and he's going to start writing with his left hand. My husband and I always hoped that he'd be a lefty (we both are, as is Little Miss), and we may now get our wish. Be careful what you wish for!

Oh, and as we were walking out of the hospital, Mister Man turned to me and said, I guess I should have been a little more careful of that frosting from the St Patrick's Day cupcakes at church, huh, Mom? It was awfully slippery.

Oh. I guess he isn't that clumsy. He slid on frosting that some child had spilled in the food free area and hadn't cleaned up. I think I feel a little better!

The three visits to the ER for three different family members in just over three months? Not feeling so good about that, however.

Poor thing. Hope he feels better soon. I suspect a cast would be envied in my family. Weird, I know.

Ouch. Brave boy. The good thing is that they say these things happen in threes, so with three ER visits in three months, you should definitely be done.

Oh my, I'm so sorry to read this! My JAM broke his collarbone when he was 4 and we were out of state visiting my in-laws. Everybody said he was fine (and hinted that he was just being dramatic), and I'm pretty sure that I saw my mother-in-law roll her eyes when I asked where the nearest ER was. And I'm pretty sure that I just barely stopped myself from waving the X-rays in her face when we returned from our evening in the hospital.

Hmmm... sorry for that tangent! Here's hoping for a speedy healing for MM!!

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and no more pain.

My goodness, poor Little Mister! What a trooper though, that he was able to suck it up and even question during the x-rays. I hope it heals quickly so that he can enjoy spring.

Poor thing! Heres to wishing him a quick recovery. ps. I laughed at the "mom doesn't deal with puke" bit. It gives me hope that i'll survive motherhood when it's my turn! I "don't do puke" either lol

"...he's a bit of a delicate flower" had me rolling. Then I felt guilty after finding out his arm really is broken! Poor little guy, I hope it heals quickly so he can get back to bike riding and swimming very, very soon. You know it's not good when there is a moment of wavering about Peter Pan. Funny he only wavered the once!

Poor kid! Sounds like he handled it pretty well though. Much better than I would have!

to think that you could get out of an ER in under 5 hours...where do you live, lucky lady?

Oh I'm so sorry for Mister Man! I saw the update on FB lastnight but wasnt' sure what or how it had happened. Hopefully all will work out and the ortho willbe able to give you good news!

Mister Man was a brave little guy in the ER. I hope he feels much better soon. With kids, you never know when a freak accident may happen. Hey, who would think that you could add "frosting" to the list of potential child hazards :)

Bless your heart (and Mister Man'S!) You guys have really had a time of it in the ER recently. When I was 10, I fell and broke all four knuckles on my right hand at a skating party. My mom didn't believe it was anything serious, so she wrapped it with an ace bandage and sent me to the school bonfire that evening (it was a Friday but I can't remember the occasion). I went on from there to my usual Friday evening at my Nana's and spent a HORRIBLE night (not Nana's fault) that I STILL remember vividly. That's what trying to sleep with four broken fingers will do to you :-( Needless to say we got it set the next day, but I also vividly remember that process and it was NOT fun. Poor little guy, I sympathize completely. But I'm glad he at least got to see the show!

And yeah, as I was walking through our garage tonight (where the rain from the tires makes the floor like glass) I was thinking "I should be careful, because I really don't need a fall right now!" (And I was, careful that is!)

Outnumbered2to1 - He's actually feeling somewhat ok, although I'm not looking forward to the ortho appointment tomorrow where he'll have it manipulated, etc.

anymommy - Oh I hadn't even thought of it like that. I knew there was a reason I liked you!

morninglight mama - Ouch, poor kid! That's (I've heard) the most painful injury you can have. I'm impressed that you DIDN'T wave them in their face. I may have ;)

Dan - Thanks, I appreciate the well wishes!

Karen - Yeah, that's my ummm curious boy. You know he's ok then, right?

Roxane - Yeah... everyone said that I'd do puke when it was my own kid but ummm so not happening. I still gag and need to run from the room. You'll survive!

Ryan Ashley Scott - It's ok. You're allowed to laugh. If we can't laugh, what fun is it? And he actually wavered twice, but he did a good job and had a great time at the play.

Heather - Yeah... I might have made a bit more noise. And complained a bit more. And required more attention. I need to keep him away from the knowledge some people are drama queens.

bernthis - Really? That's the longest we've spent in this ER. I was in an out for stitches in under an hour recently. Ok about five weeks ago.

MaBunny - I'm hoping so, too! I have an appointment for 9:15 tomorrow!

septembermom - Yeah... and I'm debating whether to say anything to the church about maybe how kids should eat where the rest of the adults do and keep food out of their play area. But I don't want to be *that* mom.

Angela - OUCH! Four broken knuckles? That's a pretty impressive landing! I'm glad you didn't fall tonight at least!

I don't know how I missed this post earlier.
Poor kid :(
And my son could still write with his right hand with the cast on. As long as the fingers can move. It was sloppy and slow, but he could do it.
Poor kid!

Cookie - Eh, you just don't like me ... I know ;) We're encouraging Mister Man to use his left hand... my husband and I are lefties and ummm he had a onesie that said "Left Handed Middle Reliever." We're fine either way!
