They're Out There Somewhere

Yesterday - at church mind you - we lost Little Miss's hat. Technically, my husband lost it as he tucked it into her hood, and it was never seen after that. I searched the sanctuary high and low. I searched the nursery where she was during the service and the room where she has Sunday School. No dice.

This wasn't the easiest hat to lose. It is lilac, unlike all the other navy and black hats you see out there. It had a puffball on top and earmuffs. It was big. But it's also gone. My only hope is that it somehow pops up there between now and next Sunday's services. It's not exactly the season to be without a winter hat here.

This isn't the first hat to disappear so far this year, though.

Mister Man is currently on his third hat of the season. Fortunately, we seem to be rotating hats for the most part. One day his black knit hat doesn't come home. I'm never sure if it's left on the bus, at daycare or at preschool.

The next day, I send him in his red and navy hat. He usually comes home in his black hat, but the navy hat doesn't make it.

Last week, neither hat came home, so I sent him to school in his Sox cap. It isn't nearly so warm as his winter hats, but at least it's something, right? That one of course came home with him. No navy hat joined it though. The black hat remains missing, too.

This weekend, we broke out black hat number two. Mister Man currently has it with him at school. Like the first black hat, it's labeled with his name. Any guesses what comes home in the backpack with him this afternoon?

On the plus side, we've never lost a glove or mitten. In five years. Mostly because I'm a throwback mom and ummm sew their mittens to an elastic band that I slip through the coat sleeves. I figure next year will be the last year Mister Man will let me do that though.

So what have you lost so far this year?

so far only gloves, but they weren't much and we replaced them:)

What I want to know is why you can put three matched pairs of sock in the wash and come back with five socks, none matching.

Oh my gosh, nothing this year YET but I remember one year I went to Target and bought about 15 pairs of their budget "magic stretch knit gloves" that were actually in the ladies accessories dept. but they looked unisex to me: just solid colored knit gloves. Cheap.

By the next year, somehow we only had a couple singles left. How the heck did that happen???

We have a case of the missing scarf right now. We think it's a grandma's house.

It's gloves/mittens in our house...I have to buy them by the gross practically!

MaBunny - You're lucky. It could definitely be worse.

J Cosmo Newbery - Well that's kind of like the new math they teach here... except it's sock math. That or the underpants gnomes are branching out!

Melisa - It's amazing how quickly they go isn't it? And funnily enough, on my way home today I stopped at Target to return something and they had hats in the dollar section. Mister Man now has a new bright red one and Little Miss has a purple one with a poof and a pink one with no poof. Unfortunately that was all they had.

Melissa - Oooo, scarves are much worse! I'm so not looking forward to the point where I need to start buying that many gloves and mittens. Maybe my kids will be the ones that never lose theirs? HA! I crack me up.

I hate the hat game. And the glove one, too. It ranks right up there with sorting socks on laundry day.

I just wanted to stop by to thank you for visiting my blog as part of BATW today! It has been great fun getting to know new bloggers all around the world.

I had to laugh when I read your post about the missing hat...I wish I had a dollar for every hat, glove or scarf my kids have lost over the years. I'd be a millionaire! :)

P.S. I tried to answer your questions under the comments section on my BATW post.

Karen - Yeah.... and you've got far more to keep track of than I do. I don't know what I'm complaining about :) Although I actually sort of like sorting socks. There's something wrong with me, isn't there?

Arthur Clan - Thanks for stopping by. And I'm definitely stopping by to see answers. thanks!

We lose enough hats and mittens to start our own store every year. I've given up and started buying really cheap ones at a discount hunting gear store!! Camo anyone?

We lost a bike helmet this summer. I know it's big! how can you lose that??? I still have no idea. I was positive that it would reappear after I bought a new one, but it never did. Maybe it's somewhere out there with one of your hats? or in that black hole that takes socks from the dryer?

Danyele Easterhaus December 9, 2008 at 11:55 AM

well, first, i love tha tyou call ur girliepie "little miss", bc that's what we call sofie. second, we lose everything, so no worries! third, i have a kiddo in dev. preschool (fr ur comment on my blog) and i love it...and really, don't care what everyone else thinks. it's still hard on the kids though. everyone else should grow up and mind their own business!

Anymommy - Actually, Mister Man had a camo hat last year (which matched his camo mittens) THAT. HE. LOST. At least you don't have to worry about that this winter, right? :)

Cookie - Wow. A bike helmet is pretty impressive. I can't say we've lost anything quite that ummm bulky. That's when you start wondering if someone stole something, right?...

momaof4wife2r - Oh, she's *such* a little miss. There's really nothing better to describe her! It sounds like you may have one like that, too. And the special needs preschool is *great* for the kids, and I wouldn't give it up. I just have my fingers crossed that we'll be able to ease out of any services and IEPs by the time he's in first grade (she's currently there at risk and without an IEP). The kids don't yet get that they're different, fortunately!

A boot! Mind we, I live not far from you - in Wisconsin just across the Illinois border - and my 4 year old came home from school Friday in his schoes cuz he couldn't find one of his boots. I searched EVERYWHERE over the weekend and only found 1 pair, 2 sizes too big. What kind of store is in the Midwest that is out of boots at the beginning of December???? Luckily, they found his boot at school on Monday so we are good to go. Guess I'll buy each boy two pairs next fall :-)

Pam - Ohhh, I feel for you. You've been getting the brunt of this storm here, too! Poor kiddo with no playing in the snow this weekend. Ouch. Glad you found it in the end!

I've lost my mind, but I've also given up looking for it. Losing things at church is not suprising; you gotta watch out for them sinners, they're a wiley bunch :)

krissy December 13, 2008 at 8:08 AM

I sew our mittens and gloves to the sleeves, too. So far, knock on wood, we haven't lost anything. I tell my kids frequently to acquaint themselves with the lost and found, and retrieve their items. It is amazing how many things end up there!

Michelle December 13, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Braja - See, I woulda thought that church would be a safer place. I hadn't thought of the sinners aspect! And unfortunately, we're not going to make it to church tomorrow, most likely (see Friday's post), so I won't be able to check to see if they've since popped up!

krissy - That's very similar to what we do with the elastic, and knock on wood we haven't lost any yet either. I haven't figured out how to do that yet with boots and hats. And yes, Mister Man lost his boots on Thursday. Boo!

Jenners December 13, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Visiting from BPOTW...

So funny. Perhaps you need to find a way to permanently affix a hat to their heads during the winter time -- some kind of comb like a wig or something!

Michelle December 15, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Jenners - I thought about that actually. I haven't found a good solution yet. On the plus side, we found Mister Man's boots today. Some *other* kid took them home on Thursday. Hmm....
