This Is SO Not My Time Of Year

Winter: A Haiku

Grey. Rainy. Dreary.
Drops outside my window fall.
I detest winter.
**
The leaves are now gone.
Bare branches, all that remain,
Cold, promising more.
**
Flakes here, wind blows there.
One last leaf falls to the ground.
Lonely, flittering down.
**
Skies grow yet darker.
The winds blow from the north now.
Winter's here. Let's hide.

I agree. It's time to hibernate!

Look, this is a bit embarrassing and certainly not my normal thing but I was awarded an Kreative Blogger award and as part of my duties as nominee, and not wanting to suffer alone, I am passing the parcel on to you as a well deserving and creative blogger.

You are brave!

I avoided the Haiku like the plague... yours was great!

Thanks for stopping by! IT's cold and grey and wet over here in Sweden too! LOL about your engagment mess-up!

Great poem!

I do love fall and winter though.

Sometimes Sophia November 13, 2008 at 6:45 AM

Beautiful imagery. The changeover to winter is too depressing.I hate when it gets dark at 4:30 PM...

Melisa Wells November 13, 2008 at 7:34 AM

Love it!

My husband was looking over my shoulder and said, "Hey, did I write that?" :) He hates this time of year, and reminds me often that the only reason he lives in Chi-town is because of me. :)

Oo I like the way you lengthened it :)

Ashley November 13, 2008 at 8:16 AM

I loved it! Although fall && winter are my fave!

Kelly November 13, 2008 at 9:27 AM

Great Haiku! Winter can be a wonderful time of year but also very depressing! Thanks for sharing with all of us!

Rhonda - I was actually trying to use the word hibernate in the haiku (which btw is a 3 verse haiku but my spaces didn't show the way they are supposed to, so now I have to go fix that!). Exactly what I want to do right now!

J Cosmo Newbery - Aww, thanks! I'll be by to pick it up but probably not until sometime next week. I appreciate it :)

Saundra - Thanks :) Haiku is easy though... 5 7 5 as long as I remember how to count, I'm ok. Of course some days that's harder than others!

Lady Fi - I can imagine that Sweden currently has similar weather... but your scenery is at least more pleasing to the eye and soul!

Michelle - Thanks! (And no, that wasn't me complimenting myself)

Tattooed Minivan Mom - Thanks! And I enjoy certain things about fall and winter, but being cold is not among them. And grey is not among them. But skiing? And snowman building? And ice skating? And football? Those parts I'm ok with!

Sometimes Sophia - I hate the darkness that early, too. Of course the wee ones think they need to go to bed earlier then, so it does have some upside!

Melisa - Thanks :) And it's good to know that you are a strong enough motivator to get your husband to live here. That does say a lot.

Shanna - Thanks :) You can't tell it's three verses but I'm about to go fix that!

Ashley - Apparently you aren't alone. Definitely not my favorite though. I miss the sun too much!

Kelly - You've summed it up exactly. And today is one of those ugly grey and dreary days.

Michelle November 13, 2008 at 9:38 AM

And apparently I'm a moron and while I can count syllables, I can't count verses. It's really four, not three :) Whoops!

Mama Wheaton November 13, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Nicely done, I avoided this prompt, I just couldn't do it. I guess I am not a good counter.

Kellan November 13, 2008 at 12:35 PM

There are so many people that do not like the winter. I do like the darker days and cooling off - as Texas is so hot for so much of the year and I am a night owl anyway. But - I do love summer a lot better. I hope you don't get too down and you have some bright, sunny days to take the gloom away.

See you soon - Kellan

Caren November 13, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Very nice! I did the haiku prompt too. I also despise winter so yours really hit home for me! Thanks!

Kimmy November 13, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Lovely! :o)

Michelle November 13, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Mama Wheaton - Obviously I have my own issues with counting. It's a good thing I'm not homeschooling! :)

Kellan - If I were somewhere like Texas I would definitely look forward to fall. Here it's just grey sky day after grey sky day.... At least the clouds keep in some of the warmth? :)

Caren - Thanks! And it sounds like I am definitely not alone in my feelings about winter!

Kimmy - Thanks! :) I had fun with this one.

Rachel November 13, 2008 at 3:29 PM

awwww. i kinda like snow. then again, i live in SoCal and never really see it. :P

AutoSysGene November 13, 2008 at 3:57 PM

I'm so feeling this...I'm beginning to think the sun got lost somewhere and won't be shining again until next summer! Sheesh!

Sam November 13, 2008 at 4:08 PM

mmmm, good one. I usually quite like winter, but this year seems to be greyer than usual! Bring on the sunshine!! ;-)

Elizabeth Byler Younts November 13, 2008 at 6:01 PM

great hiakus!

Jay @halftime lessons November 13, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Nicely done! I really suck at those...

I love it...I may just start having a thing for the haiku!

MaBunny November 13, 2008 at 9:25 PM

Girlfriend, if you detest winter then you are living in the wrong state! Come down here in Texas where we are still wearing shirt sleeves because although it was in the 50s this morning it got up to a pleasant 77 this afternoon!

KatBouska November 13, 2008 at 10:05 PM

Huge fan of winter are you!?! ;) Suck it up...it's gonna be here for awhile.

Jennifer November 13, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Great job and I'm missing the fall already, even if it is still here..kind of !

Michelle November 14, 2008 at 12:39 PM

Rachel - Snow I'm good with. It's the other parts of it that are so nasty and dreary and blah that I'm not such a fan of :)

Melissa - I can imagine you are. And I've heard nasty and blustery and 20s in the next couple days. Yuck!

Sam - Thanks! It does seem to be much more grey than normal, doesn't it? Maybe we should do a sun dance (like a rain dance but not)?

Elizabeth - Thanks!

Jay - Thank you. I actually had been avoiding haikus but this was fun....

Dawn - I'm with you. I think I had an irrational fear before!

Mabunny - I know... but I'm married to a schoolteacher. That whole giving up the pension and steps and everything is sorta hard. I could really go for 77 right now. Actually, I'd be ok with 40 and sun!

Mama Kat - Ummmm no. And thanks for the cheery reminder ;)

Jennifer - I realized the other day that fall is a much shorter season than spring. We go straight from 70s and nice to 30s and 40s. We don't get many days in the 50s and 60s with sun. If we did, I think I might do better. Or not.

Karen November 16, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Now see, this is my time to shine. But not the rain. The sunny November days are fabulous though.

Michelle November 16, 2008 at 11:03 PM

Karen - That's because you have that oh so very cool corn maze that you run. That would keep my spirits up, too!

Anonymous November 21, 2008 at 8:14 PM

I feel like you do when the skies are gray and we get a lot of gray here. I do love it in a way with the snow on the ground though because it makes it sooooo light in the house which makes me feel good.

Michelle November 22, 2008 at 11:29 PM

blueviolet - I know what you mean. The snow does seem to make it brighter and happier. Of course we don't have any of that -- yet!
