Achoo!

I need to ask a favor. I really need to change one thing. I just want the power to change one little thing. It's small. I promise. But so many people will benefit.

We started school a week ago Tuesday. By Saturday, Mister Man was snuffling and sneezing regularly. I attributed it to allergies, as I'd also been sneezing periodically.

No, it wasn't allergies.

Yesterday on the car ride to a playdate, Mister Man told me his ear was hurting? You mean the one where I told you that if you didn't quit snuffling you'd get an ear infection? Yeah... that one.

And last night, Little Miss was up at 1:43am crying for someone to wipe her nose. This the girl who sleeps through the night and wakes up in the morning to play silently until I'm ready to get her out of bed. Yep, this morning she was sniffling, too.

Oh yeah. This morning, I woke up with that tickle in my throat. You know, the one that tells you that you're starting to get a cold and it's time to load up on the orange juice and chicken noodle soup? Yeah, that one.

So four days into the school year, and the bugs have already had time to percolate and germinate and turn into illnesses.

Granted, we have no green excretions yet, so no one needs to stay home from school, but I'd really, really like to make it harder to transmit bugs from one person to another. I totally get how it's important to have the bugs and to ensure that you have a strong immune system and test it so that you stay strong and healthy long term. But really, we're four days in, and this isn't boding well for the rest of the year.

Can I please just have the power to make that one teensy change? I'm fine with getting sick once in awhile, but can we wait until the middle of winter when it's horrible out and yucky and you actually want to make chicken noodle soup? And really, we don't need to be sick nonstop from September to May, do we? Can't I just schedule one or two weeks in the middle of winter?

I promise, none of this is coming from intense jealousy that my husband, who's been a teacher for fifteen years, doesn't get sick anymore and only the three weak members of the family have this issue. I swear. It's all about trying to make life easier for the wee ones and for all their little friends.

I swear. Pretty please?

I am with you big time on this wish! We are 2 weeks into school and 3 out 5 of us have strep throat and sinus infections! Fun times right there let me tell ya!

I'll give you a hearty amen on this. I started to get that tickle yesterday afternoon, and by this morning, my throat is so swollen and irritated that it closes up every time I try to talk. No kidding. I had to cancel a con-call I had for this morning and I stayed home because there's no point in going in to the office, where everyone will expect me to speak regardless. Gahhhh!!!I'm with you. It's only Sept. And I took my vitamins, I promise. Even Airborne. And yet...ughhhhhhhhhh.

(Worst part? No kids to blame it on.)

Hope you and I, and the wee ones both feel better soon!

Oh Michelle, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I've had two close friends have miscarriages. One now has twins , the other is going after IVF... hearbreaking indeed.
As for the colds/snuffles/sneezes I can deal with that. I can't deal with them getting those horrible 24 hour puking bugs... YUCK! Those always start up when school starts too.

my sass has been in school 2 days and already the classroom sign said that someone in that classroom had strep !! i also heard that lice has already hit the older schools.

Oh, I feel your pain. Have you ever tried Airborne (they make it for kids) or EmergenC (not sure if that's OK to give to kids)? They're vitamin-y sorts of things you add to water to make a fizzy drink and thew work! Mostly they're loads of C with other stuff, too, but I swear by them.

Failing that, there are always hazmat suits :)

Hope you all feel better!

Oooh, I am so with you on this topic. My hubby catches our cold {which festered for a month at our end} and he sniffles for 2 days! His immune system is just way too good. Once the kids hit school in September, it alwasy seems that someone will get something and pass it around to the family.

I ahve noticed however, that we changed to natural cleaning products {as a result to severe asthma in hubby and kids} and our lives have been much better, less virus-ridden for the past two years.

whatever helps! :)

Oh, hon. Be careful what you wish for. We waited until mid year and were slammed so hard that we're still reeling from illness that stemmed from that epic blow. Take a few sniffles now, trust me.

Granted!

Yeah right, like I have the power to grant other people powers. But if I did have that power, I'd definitley grant you the power to change the way germs work...or don't work...or something like that.

:o)

KatBouska September 10, 2008 at 4:43 PM

Amen to no bugs. I'm ALL for that change!!

Angela September 10, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Hope you are not coming down with it! It hit me hard late yesterday and I've been miserable all day. Taking airborne, eating chicken soup and taking tylenol, but I have a bad feeling it's going to be a long night! ;-( Hope you avoid it!

Kellan September 10, 2008 at 10:33 PM

I'd sign a petition to make that change - just send it my way!

Take care and get better soon - Kellan

That sounds like a great idea!

Luckily no one is sick here yet, so now i'm gonna have to wipe down my monitor after visiting your blog ;)

I hear ya! 3 days into my daycare job and I have a sore throat and Moose has a runny nose. Great...ugh.

Nina September 11, 2008 at 11:48 AM

I know where you are coming from. We are three weeks into school and everyone has stuffy noses. It wasn't even a month ago we all had the flu. I still haven't figured out how we all got the flu in the summer time but it happened.

Angie's Spot September 18, 2008 at 5:57 PM

Yeah, it only took 2 weeks of school for my girls to bring home that nasty stomach virus. Hope you guys are feeling better now!

Michelle September 18, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Tabi - Welcome! Bummer on the strep. I've heard that's been going around here, too. Yuck yuck yuck.

Angela - I know you really went down for the count. I was lucky - yoga seems to be my cure all. Every time I start to get sick, if I do yoga it goes away the next day.

Mabunny - Yeah, Little Miss' cold has turned into the puking thing (Sat/Sun) and diarrhea thing (Tues through today). *sigh* Oh, and we found out that her tubes are no longer functioning. Wheee!

Feener - Ouch! Not that I'd want each, but I'd take strep anyday over lice. Just the thought of lice creeps me out.

Diane - Welcome! We do have Airborne and periodically give it to the wee ones when they're getting sick. It does seem to help a bit. And I'm all for the hazmat suits, but I don't think they make them in wee one size!

Krazy Armstrong K's - It would be lovely. Truly lovely, no?

Rosie - Actually, it's a good thing that your husband does have a good immune system. Remember how helpless and whiny men get when sick? I may have to look into the natural cleaning products though.

Karen - Well, I didn't mean that I wanted the power to delay it, but rather the power to remove those germs. Right? Maybe not. Hmmmm....

Angie - That would be a pretty cool power, wouldn't it? So long as you also have the power to take away the powers when you find out they're not turning out the way you intended!

Kathy - Glad you agree! I'm sure you're fully in support of that one given the daycare.

Angela - Knock on wood, I'm not. I managed to sneak away from it, but Little Miss has been hit hard.

Kellan - I'll make sure your signature is the first on the list. Right after mine, anyway.

Cookie - Doesn't it though? And I take no offense to you wiping down the monitor.

Mrs S - Oh ouch! Three days is quick? Although our daycare has had three staff out at various times this week with illness. Blech!

Nina - There is such thing as a summer flu, I've been told. I guess you were just the lucky ones who got to experience it!

Angie - Yep, we've got that summer virus now ourselves (well Little Miss anyway). And it was two weeks into her school year.
